2021 Gartner® Supply Chain Executive Report: Improve decision quality with reciprocal human-machine augmentation

January 21, 2022

Improve decision quality with reciprocal human-machine augmentation

According to Gartner, "Today, companies are experiencing three major forces that contribute to the shrinkage of supply chain human domain knowledge: talent retirement and mobility, increased emphasis on technical skills, and broader use of analytics for decision automation.

With these three forces at play, supply chain leaders must devise an approach with two goals:

  • Capturing human domain knowledge — especially tacit knowledge — and incorporating it into analytics, machine learning, and AI.
  • Leveraging advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI to augment human knowledge.

These two goals can be achieved within the “reciprocal human-machine augmentation” framework in decision-making." This framework is defined as “continuous sharing of knowledge between humans and machines that increases their collective ability to make better decisions”.

There are 3 strategies that supply chain leaders can use to achieve this reciprocal human-machine augmentation:

  1. Crowdsourcing
  2. Process mining
  3. Data literacy
